Weekly Update #46

Hey everyone it’s time for our first regular weekly update of 2017. It’s been a busy week with the release of another patch as we prepare for our Alpha backer free-play weekend. Unfortunately, last week I accidentally misreported the dates. The Alpha free-play weekend will start this Friday, January 27th, at 2pm EST and continue until Monday, January 30th, at 2pm EST. To download and install the game visit https://inovaestudios.com/Battlescape at 2pm EST and click the DOWNLOAD button. You must be an Alpha backer. If you’re not an Alpha backer and you would like to upgrade you can do so here. Please keep in mind that this is not an Alpha build of the game, it’s a prototype, and there’s a good chance some of you may run into problems. Representatives of the company will be monitoring our public Discord server and the forums to quickly assist anyone who runs into problems with playing the game.

Alpha map test for factory geometry

Along with the patch Flavien has made significant progress on optimizing our networking code for bandwidth. It’s now at a point where we feel confident that a player with an average home broadband connection should have enough bandwidth to host a 150-200 player server. Whether or not their computer is powerful enough to handle that many players is of course another matter entirely. I’ve also made quite a bit of progress on the new UI system which now draws colored boxes. Exciting I know but there’s a lot that goes into it and it’s a major milestone.

The NPC hauler

On the art side work continues on polishing up some minor issues with the final geometry for small ships, space station windows, the initial geometry pass for our cockpit bobble heads, and final factory geometry. Lastly, I’m going to try to get a few more improvements to our installation runtime completed before the start of the Alpha free-play weekend. That’s it for this week, we’re looking forward to seeing all of you Alpha backers in the game over the weekend!

I am looking forward to seeing larger numbers of players in the prototype. Hopefully we have more than 50 maybe even 100 or more simultaneously ingame. Thats going to be interesting and fun.

Dumb question, but if I have a kickstarter pledge, then buy another pledge at indiegogo and link both to my battlescape account, will both pledge levels be handled separately, or will both pledges be added and assign a pledge level based on the combined money pledged?

Both pledge levels will be handled separately. If you want to upgrade I recommend you use our upgrade system.

hi guys,
will there be an actual download button on the page by friday?
there is no download link on neither https://inovaestudios.com/Battlescape nor https://inovaestudios.com/Battlescape/Access
i already downloaded the inovae launcher from Battlescape/Download, but that’s what i need to be able to play on the alpha weekend?

The DOWNLOAD button will become available on Friday. Yes the DOWNLOAD link is just to install the I-Novae Launcher. If you already have the launcher then that’s all you’ll need to play the game. When you start up the Launcher on Friday after 2pm EST the ‘Install’ button should become available to you to install the game.

In case you were wondering, it’s a ~1.6 GB download.

Also, make sure you run the launcher with administrative access before starting the download (right click -> run as administrator). In my personal experience, I haven’t been able to actually install/update the game without completing this step. If you forget, have already completed the download, but the launcher shuts down with an error, don’t panic, just run as administrator, and give it a few seconds. You shouldn’t have to re-download it again, so it should go straight to installation.

Yep. I had to run it as admin too.
Had already completed the download so it went straight to installation.

@Arkenbrien @hrobertson how long ago was this the case? If you uninstall everything and do a fresh installation do you still have to run as admin?

In the week before Christmas. It was a fresh install.

I’ll do another fresh install tonight and let you know.

If the non-admin fails it would be helpful if you could provide logs.

It happened for this latest update. I didn’t run as admin and it had an error, ran as admin and did fine, no re-download needed. I’ll see if I can’t find the logs for that. Where would they be?

They’re in your C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Temp. They begin with INovaeInstaller_*.log.
