Old SciFi movies are weeeeiiirrrd … but also super awesome!

Today I wondered …

Is actively ducking downwards any better then just letting oneself fall to the ground? Any thoughts? I guess it isn’t but who knows?

I guess that if you were actively ducking downwards, you could say that you were doing something important. If you let yourself fall to the ground, you’re being stupid.

I would guess it is for two reasons. First, you can better control how you hit the ground, potentially hurt yourself less and be in a better position once prone. Second, if you just let yourself fall, your lower body is in the way, slowing you down.
That said, I would encourage you to search for someone more experienced in repeatedly ducking things.

Also, that’s not any old SF movie. That’s old Solaris (thanks reverse image search), a movie that you can’t possibly fully appreciate if you didn’t live in '80s Soviet Union. Unfortunately I didn’t, so I have to take other people’s word when they say it’s one of the great SF movies.
Anyone seen the remake btw?

I saw the remake. The one with clooney yeah? I had no idea what the movie was about going into to it so it caught me a bit off guard. I thought it was pretty good though, it took me at least half the movie to figure out what is going on though…

As far as ducking goes, I guess I can say I’m a semi expert? I play lacrosse and ducking can be an integral part of the sport! There are times where a shot goes wide and you have to leap to the ground…there are other times when I may need to drive to cage and I can tell you, you have a much smaller chance of scoring if you just lay down on the ground as opposed to trying to duck under or around someone.

I know, I took the frameshot after watching this 1972 piece of Film. Except it being in Russian I don’t see what you mean by only being apreciable by people from that time and location. I enjoyed it pretty much.

I also watched the new one a long time ago. I can remember it being quite as strange, I’ll explain what I mean by that further down.

Contrary to the new one old Solaris has a little more subtle soundtrack. They both still achieve this effect of the uncanny slowly building up and building up and when the curtain close they never released it making you feel as if you are on Solaris and feel its presence on reality … strange, weird. One word doesn’t do that feeling justice. I still feel it.

Also it has some great cinamatographic shots.

Funny is that Tarkovsky himself said that he deliberately made the first 30 minutes of his movies slow so people not into it could get up and walk away :smiley:
Stanislav Lem did’t like both movies … so i guess now I need to read the book.

lol. At least there’s a reason for the change in pace. Most movies it’s a roller coaster of slow moody, followed by intense action, followed by “WHY THE **** ARE YOU KISSING THE GIRL THERE ARE BAD GUYS THAT NEED TO DIE!!!”.

The required thin romantic subplot is seriously getting old very quickly in many modern movies. I hope it dies a quick death, but why should it? The audiences seem to like it… :frowning:

I hope it dies quickly as well. That’s because there are so few movies that actually pull this off. Most of the movies that do this seem to take themselves too seriously. So when they expect you to swallow the romantic subplot, it just seems ridiculous. And it is. The only movie I have seen to date that had that situations AND pulled it off was Tom Cruise’s Knight and Day. That’s only because the movie DIDN’T take itself seriously and didn’t expect you to take it seriously. So when Tom passes between the two pillars with bad guys with a diploma from the following school:

and kisses the girl, it’s just because it would be fun and funny to do and watch.

I just wrote up a semi technical response on my phone to a relativity question on another forum. I hit submit, and the forum fucking ate it. I also just failed my Probability and statistics exam. I needed some place to vent. Hi guys

. FunFact: The class average on the first exam was 42(yaya I know the answer) and I got a 50. This time I’ll be lucky for a 40. Here’s to hoping the rest of the class failed with me.

Does anybody know if there’s a Opera or Chrome extension or programm that allows to censor or substitute certain text lines inside every opened web-page?
I’m fed up with: “10 ways to slurp a sirup?” or “You won’t believe how ordenary these pictures are. Number 3 is over the top!”

Every time I see such a thing it hurts … inside.

This reminds me that I should polish up and release those two browser extensions I wrote some time ago.

Just managed to get SoftXpand Duo working.

Being a fan of centralized systems I use my Desktop for everything, even for my Home Entertainment System (as you may know). Living in living community brought up some problems though as a flatmate wanted to watch stuff and I wanted to play some games, it isn’t like I wasn’t expecting it … I didn’t expect caring that much. So I found SoftXpand Duo. We’ll see if it works out.

Biggest drawback is the missing support for Aero. Turns out Aero prevents screen tearing … :frowning: I guess I’ll only enable SoftXpand when needed.

I got sent this a few days ago by my dad (we are both major Star Wars nerds and it made us chuckle). Since my previous forum name was random_guy25, I suppose this thread should be my natural home… :stuck_out_tongue:

Awesome! Had I known in high school what I wanted to do I’d be the same…

I’m doubling in Applied Physics and Math to go for the next best thing… I’ll probably go to grad school for mechanical or aerospace too.

What do you plan to do with it?

Hopefully something in the aerospace industry. I originally wanted an aerospace degree, then decided for a mechanical because mechanical does apply to a wider job range. That way, I can get what I want and not be completely out of luck if I can’t.
