Death threats were in the video so they belong here every bit as much as ships being stolen. In fact ships being stolen has been talked to in the ground. What’s more, you and 2~3 others on a Roberts Space Industry thread isn’t everybody that you pretend to represent. What we should be talking about is the SC community and how it not only tolerates threats to other members but ignores them - instead they would rather ban people for saying something critical about Star Citizen. Sadly, your efforts are misdirected.
1: Their policy on threatening behaviour is the same as pretty much every other game dev out there.
2: Any silencing of critics is a crappy but entirely separate issue.
3: I’ve yet to see any member of this community who doesn’t think that death-threats are disgusting and shouldn’t be tolerated.
-
Policy is one thing - actually doing something about it is another.
-
If CIG can find the time to ban people for their criticism but ignore banning supporters for threats - very much the same issue as it speaks to CIG’s maleficence in the community they created.
-
No one here takes death threats lightly, yet you are only willing to give it passing lip service. In fact you and another individual seem hell bent on sweeping this disgusting and dangerous behavior under the rug by pushing a topic that is in the video elsewhere - anywhere I suppose but a thread on RSI (keep everything positive and pretty right?). Your objectivity is, well, overwhelming.
We’re still going? Ok then.
-
If you’d please provide instances of CIG ignoring death-threats made in their game or on their forum after they’ve been reported I’d love to see it. (And I guess it’d actually make this discussion somewhat relevant to this thread rather than a full derailment)

See point 1

Lip service requires talking about something, I’m just typing here. It’s quite literally the absolute most I can do in an internet forum thread about star-citizen on the community forums of an entirely unrelated in-development space arena shooter.
*3a. Bluedrake himself didn’t intend people to only talk about those 16 seconds in a 780 second video.
*3b. The fact you think I’m pro-SC gives me no end of amusement.
*Edited as I missed one of your aside points.
1.Well, I haven’t seen them inquiring about the death threat - have you?
2, See point 1.
3 Just ‘typing here’? Yeah, seems accurate enough.
4 Yeah, well, when someone is only concerned about candy coating other games and communities, it is pretty clear which side of the galaxy their in.
Anyway, this discussion has run it’s course…all the best.
Inquiring about a death threat is not a matter for CIG or the public. It is a matter for the police and ONLY the police. Even then they cannot do much about it until the threat involves an actionable statement (eg. I will do X at Y place to you).
If I developed a game and someone criticized it which then made a fan threaten the critic’s personal safety does that make me at fault? No, because it is the behaviour of the individual. Not the developer.
Please stop trying to pin this on CIG. These sickos are individuals that simply cannot function normally toward people.
Bluedrake made an angry rant about a criminal act that occurred to him. His rant triggered some angry individuals who commited criminal acts. Both of these are a matter for the police, not the court of public opinion.
CIG is greatly responsible for creating the environment that promotes this kind of rabid fan based nutbags. It is interesting that you seem to feel it is fine for CIG to ban people for their opinions, even off site, but stand idly by when members are threatened. What’s more, this is not only a matter for the police but also the very individuals who promoted an environment that clearly promotes this kind of behavior. Because hey, if CIG can ban people on and off site for their opinions, then it’s only a matter of progression that fans would participate in silencing others by any means. And I just have to ask when do you think it’s time for developers to take threats and their culpability seriously? After someone is hurt or killed?
A developer can ban whomever is in breach of ToS. The act of banning is not a promotion of criminal acts. It doesn’t give anyone an excuse to behave in a criminal manner. Nor does selling virtual items. The individuals are responsible to behave in a civil manner.
That is exactly the kind of flawed argument these criminals would use to threaten peoples safety. Correlation is not causation. CIG has a right to refuse access under its terms and conditions just like any other developer. The fact that these badly behaved fans are taking matters into their own hands is their individual choice, and they can be banned by the developer if they are found to be linked to one of their accounts.
Bluedrake was assisted within 24hrs and got his account back and CIG have reiterated the need for proper account security. That is as far as they can go.
Your logic is flawed. They can go further, you are deluding yourself if you think they can’t, especially when they ban people for opinions. And as it has already been pointed out they have rules against threats to other members. But rules are only good if they are applied. And you are also confusing morality with law - clearly CIG enforces morality at least what they believe is morality and death threats I think we can all agree is morally corrupt. What’s more, CIG is throwing gasoline on a fire with their own special brand of hype and intolerance - I hope they stop pretending, like some here, that it’s business as usual, before someone gets hurt.
In other news, there is a new Q&A video dedicated to heads (I think):
and
What’s this?! An extremely well written article by…[gasp] Kotaku!
IMO the writer has done a good job analyzing the internal dynamics of the company. 2013-14 was a shitty unstable period for SC dev and it really confirms how CIG got to its present state of development.
Man, Illfonic basically took a shit in the tub and CIG were left to clean up
It’s easy to blame the guys who can’t defend themselves and I’ve been wondering for a while if CIG didn’t use them as a scapegoat. I dunno where the truth is exactly, but at the very least CIG is to blame for its lack of communication with Illfonic and checking out what they were doing.
It’s possible it was a case of mismanagement on CIG’s part. Not keeping a tight enough grip on the reins and ensuring their outsourced project was proceeding as they intended.
Would it be fair to suggest that had CIG been keeping a closer eye on things then any difficulties could have been nipped in the bud earlier? If not then perhaps Illfonic just bit off far more than they could chew and could never deliver what CIG wanted from the FPS component?
I understand where you’re coming from but as a contractor they are also responsible for understanding the scope of work. So it’s just as much their fault as CIGs.
CIG has been taking the hit over the star marine delay for the past year, if they’re using illfonic as a scapegoat they’re doing it wrong. Usually scapegoating activity would involve some official statements about whos fault a delay is, but instead they were mostly silent about exactly why the delay occurred even as they pumped out progress updates, taking the PR hit themselves. If it really was illfonic’s fault im not sure there was a better option.
Usually scapegoating activity would involve some official statements about whos fault a delay is
Official statement? lol. No, all it takes is a word, insinuation or off the cuff remark from a DEV and the fanboys start pointing fingers - and of course defending CIG’s wise decision to use Illfonic in the first place. Oh, and a better option would have been to use DEVs with more experience. Although, it’s kind of hard to point a finger at lilfonic themselves even with their limited experience because CIG has made moving the bar and priorities a game within itself, not to mention rewriting the backend.
Really great article. Great work. Roberts is definitely a genius.
I guess criticisms are inevitable.
It’s like “for now nobody has succeed in doing it so it’s impossible”. How long does this thing will remain a secret : great things begin with a great belief, a crazy dream. It is something nobody has done before. Of course there is no successful example.
There is always a first time
So easy to say “you never get it”. The fact is that if you say that, YOU never get it, for sure. So please don’t bother those who try
I think INovae, that wasn’t embarrassed to use Chris Roberts fame to transform its own great project into reality, should stay humble and not “cast the first stone” on him. He’s part of the success with his sentence on top of I:B KS : “a working prototype that is in a word spectacular”
