Mines still preparing for dispatch, dammit Amazon. I guess I wont be playing it tonight.
The Hype is real.
Preloading now!
No pre-load for me.
So for whom knows of Scott Manley (of Kerbal Space Program fame), heās already been releasing letās play videos. Warning: new player, lacks experience.
Dammit Iām still stuck at work! No spoilers
Amazon had a ādistribution issueā so I may not get the box till Friday, but they emailed me the code. Just a 6 hour download now.

Sneaky bastards saved my ass.
It came!
Really, the mothership model is awesome. Itās now on my desk, all lit up and purty. The keyfob is pretty cool as well, although I could have wished for a better build quality. The historical briefing/artwork book is smaller in terms of dimensions than I expected, but thatās only because Iām comparing it to the Game of the Year edition (1999), which is nearly twice the size. All the content is there plus the artwork, just in a smaller package. I was also pretty impressed with the packaging.
Unfortunately, I canāt even install the game until late thursday night. But Iāll have all of Friday to lead the Kushan to Hiigara!
Been playing this, quite fun i gotta say though theres some problems with the hw1 remaster, the mechanics dont really line up all that well in the hw2 engine.
Kadeshi seem to have hardcoded fuel for their swarmers for example but nobody else does.
HW1 remaster is a little buggy, nothing game breaking yet though.
Building the resource controller after the Bentusi arrive means the controller gets stuck undocking until they go away. Trying to cap a couple frigates in sea of lost souls and the salvage corvettes inexplicably stop moving half way back to the mothership.
The most annoying thing for me though is the UI scaling. Really bad choices for a 1080 monitor, which is surprising given how itās a very common resolution. Size 1 is tiny⦠playable, but its impossible to read the # of a type of ship in your current selection. Whereas size 2 is already too big giving you overlap with some ui elements.
Iām going to download this thing tonight.
So I decided to play a skirmish vs comp before heading out to class, and Iām extremely impressed with the visuals so far. However, have any of you noticed that the asteroids only yield 60!!! RUs? And that on the highest resource multiplier?
I think I did actually, I was only messing around for a few minutes so I didnāt question it further though.
So the actual box arrived today. Itās a nice box. 2 minor points about the ship though:
- the cable is too short for me. Canāt quite reach the shelf from a port on the back of my computer on the floor.
- putting it in an orientation where you can see the engine lights makes the cable more noticeable.
First point will be rectified when I get a USB hub to put on the desk, which I was thinking about getting anyway as Iām running out of ports.
It seems that only the 8 player maps had the low RU yield. I switched to a 6 player map and the normal yields returned. So just some map adjustment is in order. Silly me for wanting an 8-way fight first thingā¦
Watched the Scott Manley first letās play videos to try and get an idea. The game look and sound beautiful, but Iām concerned by voice acting.
Now, my most lasting memories are with the French version of Cataclysm, which was, for the most part, quite good. The main characterās voice actor gave all he got, and I have fond memories of an early pirate, who had just the right voice tone, somewhere between arrogant and bored (as in āwe have a freaking heavy cruiser and youāre just a mining shipā). So I canāt really compare to the original English voices of the first game.
For what Iāve heard in those first few missions, however, voice acting sounds a bit off. The later mission in the Gardens that was in a preview linked above has great voice performances, so Iām surprised they couldnāt get such quality everywhere.
Iāll still buy it the second they get themselves to redo Cataclysm, mind you, and quite possibly before that.
Notice how it barely fits. Thereās a fingers width between the top of the ship and the next shelf. The product page stated it was over 13" tall, which I took into account when I bought the shelves. And itās true, it is over 13" tall, but more accurately itās slightly over 15". I got lucky.
