Roberts Space Industries - Star Citizen

i hear from the grapevine that Star Citizen is doing a free fly until march 20th. i’ve been thinking of opening it up, but it’s going to be like opening up pandora’s box for me.

i play elite: dangerous and i will be the first to admit it’s not all that it’s cracked to be - is star citizen the same gig as that?

If you don’t mind testing and experiencing what they call “open älpha development”, lots and lots of new bugs and crashes with every 20 GIG update/download.

It’s very pretty and you need a really mean rig to enjoy all that beautifully hand-crafted “content”.

Star Citizen is still trying to be a game, and imo its gonna be a while.

I remember when they first advertised a few hundred in one instance…they simply over promised, especially with an engine that wasn’t designed for it. Told them as much and got seriously trolled for for my troubles. And this was at the beginning before any real work was done on CryEngine. Well, all I can say is who’s crying now?

Do it if you want to get a sense of the ship flight mechanics and first person interaction within the game.
If you have a factory overclocked GPU, the game will be less prone to crashing if you underclock it to its base core clock value.

And yes, there are bugs. It is still in development.

I wouldn’t even try it if I were you. Just stick with Infinity and you’ll be the happiest in the end

They never advertised “a few hundred in one instance”, the stated goal from the getgo was 50-100, with an instance being more or less within visual range. They’re already close.

They’ve been increasing the max player count per universe instance pretty steadily each update, and thats without the dynamic instancing in yet. Do bear in mind that in SC, 100 people is very different from 100 ships. A ship like the freelancer will count for 5 people, superhornets are two man, and there are capital ships we haven’t got exact counts for yet.

Resume your crying, i guess, since apparently you were at one point?

jeez… you really are pro Star Citizen, aren’t you?!

@Zen that must be where you get your name from in the first place

Regardless of if you like it or not, the game has a unique flight model worth trying if you like spaceflight, and a lot of the things they’re doing with first person gameplay are worth experiencing at least once. I don’t think its worth telling people not to even try it when it’s on a free weekend.

We went over this during the infinity kickstarter, SC and battlescape aren’t really the same market and won’t fill the same urges for players, especially not now. In one, you control a character, in a spaceship, in a mmo. In the other you control a ship with everything resetting between matches.

? Crying? No need to troll here…it’s all good. You are correct, the talk was 200 in a system and 50~100 per instance. But it was unclear whether this guess-timation was for players and/or ships. But given arena commander is still struggling with 8 players on each team, it doesn’t bode well for even 50 players. Of course once optimized player count will increase but many often forget or simply want to forget: graphic fidelity always takes a big hit after optimization. So player count will increase - at a price. And we are probably talking about some serious optimization to reach 50 players. Might even make Minecraft look like HD.

lol. :relaxed:

Are you talking about networking limitations or client render limitations? It sounds like you have the two confused, because there aren’t any obvious networking issues in arena commander atm and haven’t been for a long time, the worst youll get is typical rubberbanding because someone’s internet connection dropped momentarily. There were some universe issues near it’s release but it’s been coming along.

Client performance limitations are only relevant to a point and become less relevant with time, if RSI wants to set the target system requirements higher than usual, well, they’ll be doing exactly what they set out to do in their original kickstarter campaign, provide a game that pushes current graphics limits. To this day people still think the original crysis was unoptimized because turning everything to max shat on every computer available at the time, but within a year hardware that could play it well proliferated and it was fine.

You’re being silly with the minecraft thing. With there already being a full range of settings(albeit hidden in config files), what’s left now is finding more efficient ways to do the same thing.

You can obfuscate the facts as much as you want but you forget one thing: I have played the game and it crashes all the time - and I have a very high end computer. What’s more there are more bugs in it than the amazon. And given the full beta game was suppose to be out in 2014 should tell you something, as does the rubber-banding problems. But there is no convincing Star Citizen fanatics - denial is their calling card. But hey if you like playing a bugged out game that crashes all the time that’s fine - all the best to you.

Alpha 2.0 Persistent Universe
Release date: 11th December.[3][28][29][21]
“ …and then a beta of the persistent universe by the end of the year (2014), which essentially is bringing all of these things into one holistic piece, and then we’ll go live after the beta which I would anticipate would probably be sometime in early 2015. But essentially from the end of 2014 you should be able to play the full game, it’ll just be beta because there obviously still will be things to tweak and balance, and we’ll try and keep the player base constrained until after we’ve gone through beta, because, you know, it’s not really a beta if you’ve got a million players. ”

Because you played a pre-release game at one point in development and it crashed, you think it crashed for every configuration, or in every module, and still does? Furthermore why do you think a high end computer will make your game crash less, will the game code develop sentience using your extra cpu cycles while its running and self correct missing pointers?

Rubber banding problems aren’t solvable. If someone disconnects, presses the strafe button, then a second later reconnects, the server must interpolate, there is no way around it. Thats why i said “typical”, they are normal and the only multiplayer games which have escaped this problem use entirely server sided movement which has other much more significant drawbacks, including quarter second input lag on top of your peripherals, monitor etc.

A rushed game is bad forever, a delayed game is simply delayed. Do keep in mind we’re on the forums for a project that took a decade to get to this point. At various points there have been predictions and milestones that havent been met, but it would be foolish to dismiss battlescape over it as many still do. Don’t make the same mistake with SC, which intentionally expanded it’s project scope to make sure we didn’t get a repeat of ED’s release.

I get the feeling that when you talk about “getting trolled” by people its more you attempting to troll them. Between this garbage and your “facts”, well, there’s not much to actually discuss with you past correcting things, some of your misunderstandings actually have interesting answers (see rubberbanding).

For someone who threw the first salvo that is a lot of self-righteous mumble jumble. Anyway, I say we are going to have to agree to disagree. I say let people play it and find out for themselves…

I don’t think its possible for a “first salvo” to be directly interpreting something you’d just said. I recommend googling “causation” for a comprehensive overview of why that is.

I’ll google ‘causation’ if you google ‘common sense’.

Guys, please,

I’ve seen too many of these stupid circular SC arguments to last me a lifetime.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion on SC. If you don’t agree, move on. No need for personal attacks.

Most of us here are also SC backers, myself @ concierge level twice over.

Sc’s development history is at least questionable, and this is an opinion shared by many backers.

I still get hyped for SC, the more ambitious space games, the better for all of us.

I as most of us here have been testing and bug reporting on every single PTU update to date, so I know what I’m talking about.

Calling what just happened in this thread a circular argument is a disservice to circular arguments everywhere, and i’ve had some good ones about SC before. This was something else entirely.

I’m just tired of the stupid bickering over a game, which may or may not see the light of day.

Nothing good about circular arguments. But I digress. Done discussing.

You think there’s a significant chance SC isn’t going to release at this stage? I mean, thinking it will be generally shitty or whatever i can see but its a little late for them to never see the light of day

Circular arguments are actually very close to being good discussion, usually the only element they’re missing is one or both parties considering the entirety of the discussion rather than just each reply, sometimes people just dont want to connect the dots, but often youll get real consideration of each point as the snake tries to eat it’s own tail. Outside of a circular argument, you have things like completely talking past eachother, people without enough reasoning skills to maintain a circular argument to begin with, extreme examples of cherrypicking, adhom, and intentional vagueness, after all there has to be substance to have a discussion at all.
