Strike that, we need fog HORNS for our ships. AWOOGA BAYBE!

Oooo. Is anyone else seeing the potential for a system that is still in its formative stages? Lots of molten surfaces, plenty of dust, planetesimals, etc?

That is a good idea. I would also like to see crazy s**t, like Interstellar’s imploding star/black hole, Gargantua, as well as planets with crazy gravity-defying effects, a la Avatar’s floating mountains.

That has been on my mind for some years. Those systems could have many 100’s of planetecimals…

You are sooooo going on my enemies list.

I am not sure why, but I am guessing it is because you don’t like any form of fantasy and want every anomaly to have a proven scientific explanation?

I am new to the forums, so I guess you’ll have to enlighten me as a seasoned veteran to these forums.

As an astronomer, I can’t be your friend.

I immediately imagined the following:

A battle raged in an undisclosed battlescape system. The capitals are closing in for orbital bombardment on the last remaining planetary facility of the Kardashian Alliance in System x45-Y planet III, moon IV. Of the three alliances battling for control of x45-Y, the Kardashians were hated the most for reasons. Ace pilot Kichae is running CAP to protect the capitals from enemies bombers when suddenly:

Katak has joined the battle

“You dare!?” Kichae roars.

Kichae leaves formation to hunt down the heathen leaving his capitals unprotected…never to be seen again. Some say he’s out there today still hunting. Others say he remains calculating the atmospheric compositions of all bodies in x45-Y and maintains that, due to discrepancies it’s all a simulation! Nobody knows for sure what happens since the Astronomical Alliance(-AA-) lost the war and all subsequent knowledge of physics after that fateful day.

Skyentist sighs

I really need to stop procrastinating

I think you need to procrastinate more.

Doesn’t mean we have to be enemies, though. If you think of it as a game (which it is and will be), wouldn’t you like there to be some extremely interesting anomalies? The boring vastness of space can easily be improved by shattered planets and stars that don’t outwardly seem to make sense.

Don’t worry about Kichae. As I said, his mind is clouded with the power of the dark side and the composition of a thousand worlds. He finds opposition in that you mock the abilities of the empire by proposing they only shatter planets instead of annihilating them completely!

It’s a pride thing.

In seriousness, Welcome to the forums!

The intent of the Inovae engine(as far as I know) is to model reality as close as possible with respect to its physics…the community has come to expect that since not many other games hold themselves to that sort of gameplay. For that reason, the truly newtonian physics and the universe that comes with it will be truly great because it should give you the sense that you really are flying around in space. Floating mountains(and other unrealistic things)sort of breaks that immersion for me and I’m sure a few others. Especially since there are people here who are in the sciences, such as Kichae, who want a truly realistic game for once! Myself included.

Good point. I did have the most fun in old real-physics space simulations such as JumpGate.

I still would like to see some amazing stars and such, but you have me mostly convinced.

The most amazing stars are the real ones. Seriously, do some research. Nature’s come up with stuff most authors couldn’t even dream of.

Well, that’s my point. We should focus on some of those truly unique ones, even if they require special attention and cannot be done in a procedural fashion.

It is great that the virtual universe will be filled with a variety of more standard stars, but having the action take place around something truly unique (and mirrored in our current universe, as you say), would be much more desirable than fighting battles around ‘The Sun.’

Special attention that the devs might not be able to give. If “unique” is the way to go, then JB’s ‘primordial system’ idea is the way to go, as that has the potential of letting the engine do the work for them.

So how is the status? Can we expect seeing something on https://www.inovaestudios.com/Battlescape soon?

I hope they get it out soon because there is a tidal wave of games coming in the next few months.

Just a heads up inovae, the battleascape website dimensions are horribly broken on mobile. I don’t know if its because its just an image and or if its something on a lower level, just though you should know!
