Battlefront 2 single player Campaign Review
I had a blast (literally)!
Starting with the good, the game is visually stunning, and the sound is excellent. Dialogue was very Star Wars, and the whole thing immersed me very quickly.
Combat was pretty slick and felt fun. It took me a while to adjust to the new special ability buttons, but movement and shooting was entertaining and even the odd occasions where I died (normal difficulty) it didn’t feel unfair - the AI is much improved from the evil auto-aiming bots of the last game!
The guns are great, and the reworked heat mechanics work really well. Choosing when to release your heat (reloading) feels much more strategic.
Playing as heroes was fun and they feel less clunky than before.
As for the story itself, it was alright. Well played, stirring at times and good fan-service without tipping off the cliff-of-eyerolling. The missions themselves were good fun and well paced. Unfortunately it did lurch a bit from one mission to the next without much bridging.
The starfighter battles are great fun - plenty to do and good controls!
The bad: The current star card/ability system is as awful as reported. And not for the reason I expected! The interface was just confusing - I was never quite sure what skills replaced which slot etc. Haven’t had time to test all the cards yet, but some seem completely irrelevant to single-player.
As mentioned, the story is kind of disjointed, although the overall arc is good.
I’m not even mentioning the lootboxes… Purchase issues aside, I don’t want random rewards, I want to choose.
Got some performance issues and hitches in places - usually at the start or end of cutscenes, or when the game was switching to a new location. However, those did settle and the rest ran pretty smooth on full graphics (with how this game looks, I was wondering if my 1060 would cope with full graphics, but it can)!
I will report back further on multiplayer when I’ve spent some time on it!
