Dwarf Fortress ‎‏

No thread for Dwarf Fortress yet in the new forums? Let’s have one!

I just got into this game after watching @Japa’s videos in the Personal Projects Thread. It took hours of tutorial videos to learn the basics. But so far I’m loving it!

As a visual person I’m not even considering to play without a tileset!

Well, just in case someone hasn’t read it yet, this is the best report of how crazy the game can be that I have yet read: Boatmurdered. Basically required reading in my opinion.

DF is absolutely insane. Too bad my laptop gets zero frames per second while generating worlds past the 100th year. Still a pretty fun game, though.

I’ve wanted to try learning how to play this game for a long, long time but I never have the time to do it :p.

@INovaeKeith, I found this tutorial series to be helpful in learning the basics:

And it was also very entertaining.

I have pretty much the same exact situation as Keith. Gonna go read that boatmurdered business and watching the series. I’m recovering from my brother’s wedding yesterday so it’s a good day to start!

Would be fun to do a similar game some day

Edit: StarkRavingMad had quite an epic turn. And they say it gets worse than that! :open_mouth:

Holy cow that was intense.

To think the amount of trouble a herd of elephants can cause.

I quite enjoyed the clearly insane Sankis and his masterful engravings.

I guess I should follow this thread.

The last two ruler’s reign… OMG! :open_mouth:
Any idea of what levels of savagery, evil and surroundings you need to get such a hilarious game? I think my currect settings are too easy.

I just finished reading that…it was an incredible tale of fire, elephants, and wonderful engravings detailing the history of a cursed fortress in the mountain. I’m building my own world right now, I don’t really know anything so I will fail quite a few times before I get a stable fortress I’m sure

They were all about fucking elephants. Elephants killing dwarves, elephants burning, dwarves burning (probably whilst being mauled to death), the occasional menacing mandrill, and LOTS AND LOTS OF CHEESE.

There was nothing right about what was going on in that fortress.

Are you using the Lazy Newb Pack with the tileset or are you going ASCII?

I went ASCII When I first started. Tilesets bring in so much more sustenance though.

I have a world with the Newb Pack and one with normal ASCII…I’m not sure if I want to stick with that “stock” feeling of ascii or to go with tilesets. Which tileset do you guys prefer? I want to try out a few before I stick with anything.

Phoebus is the recommended one I think (has a tile for everything). Phoebus pack should be highlighted by default in The Lazy Newb Pack.

Let’s read Boatmurdered. If you are a lazy reader you might wan’t to listen to the story

Here’s a map of my current multi layered fortress. The image is huge and GDrive preview viewer can’t zoom all the way in (=blurry texts) so I suggest you download the image if you want to be able to read all the texts.

I’m especially proud of the 2 level dining hall!

Good design, I once made an entrance 8 Z levels with 3x3 pillars of paved marble. Had to abandon due to fun infestation.
