Weekly Update #2

It’s alright, there’ll be another breakthrough in few years that’ll make anyone who buys this upcoming range feel stupid. It’s just how tech goes

Yeah, not too worried about it. Still have a pretty good card that will last a while. Besides, if we waited for the next tech advancement we would be changing CPUs and GPUs every 2 years.

Well, desktop GPU sales have been falling for years and I wonder if NVIDIA decided that they needed something that would get a lot of people to upgrade. So perhaps five years ago they started looking into what that might take and now Pascal is almost upon us. Also, DX12 and Vulcan are here. They’re pushing pretty hard for a big jump.

Note that Christmas 2007 saw over 30 million units sold, while last summer was under 10 million.

I think that a number of companies are pulling out all the stops in an effort to offer products that seem far more compelling than ever before. Their little bumps in features, performance and such just haven’t been attracting buyers, so they need something with a bigger punch.

Well, IMO, you can probably count on two hands the number of games that actually run considerably better on the higher ranged cards released with ‘little bumps’ compared to mid-ranged stuff. Sure, a Titan would be nice, but an HD 79xx will run 99% of games just fine. So economically speaking, upgrading is becoming less and less of a requirement, especially if you’ve a good card, even if it’s a few years old.
