Weekly Update #2

The problem with ‘short’ delays is they are getting less and less short with each passing day. We were told that it would possibly be out by the end of December - that came round and nothing…then we were told end of January and that went and gone…then February and that is now up in the air…so sure, it may appear short but tag on more short delays and we talking a long delay. Best to put it out so we can actually start making videos to promote…and it gives INS a sense of forward momentum publicly. Besides, this is pre-alpha so I am not expecting a smooth installation anyway.

You’re right, I really wish I could justify in my mind the need for smooth patches but at the end of the day 2gb+ is finally something I can scoff at for downloads.

I have a fair internet connection, so I won’t mind. Just please don’t let it go as long as Descendant Studios has. I backed their Descent: Underground Kickstarter in April of 2015, they were talking about the “launcher patcher” in May being important to save huge download times, and now with their title due next month we’re still doing 2GB+ for every update they release. I really do think more highly of you guys than that, but just to throw it out there as a negative example.

To be fair we were told January which could have been from the 1st to the end of the month, and they were optimistic about getting it out sooner, so it’s not cool to hold December against them as a deadline in my view. To expect professionalism from people is a good thing, and holding people’s feet to the fire from time to time is an admirable trait, but maybe you could consider that it might be a good idea to cut iNovae some slack and sort of wipe the slate clean with regard to past deadline issues now that they’re committed and crunching full-time. I’ve heard you specifically bring up deadlines failures in the past, and I take note but don’t disagree. I mean this as a suggestion and not an accusation–sometimes it can be unhealthy to hold things over people’s head as they make headway, laboring to do right in it. Right now where they stand is not unreasonable. They set a good date in the Kickstarter, as far as I can tell. Losing man-power is not something that can be planned for.

If they lose another man we can start talking to Keith and Flavien about where they went wrong. Still really impressed with this project.

Honestly I’m still stuck on how one guy decided not to join. Because I thought everyone was basically in the moment the KS got funded. But that’s optimism at it’s best. Only slightly wish we had more details regarding that but oh well.

If they said possibly December than it isn’t fair to exclude it. In fact anything is possible…they could possibly make a date that might be feasible depending on unforeseeable hitches that could depend on past hitches that have direct influence over unforeseen future hiccups…and on and on and on…

Anyway, this can keep going on in circles forever and sooner or later dates need to be met. After all, we said we can wait it out when December passed and when we were told that January wasn’t possible we understood given the transition and patiently waited and are still patiently waiting; lets not suggest otherwise.

“they could possibly…” you just went off the rails. I’m saying what I’m saying, not making any loose argument about delays being understandable, so you’re the only one going there. Also the Kickstarter says “est. January 2016 or sooner”, and anything else that was said was said in conversation with the community and in optimism. I remember hearing that December was a possibility as well. I stand by my statement that it’s not cool to hold that against them as a deadline. If you want to take it a little further it’s actually disingenuous/dishonest to call something a deadline that is not a deadline by definition. Please try to be more reasonable.

They said possibly December and it is nearing the end of February and may not be until the end of March? How is that reasonable? What’s more I never gave them a hard time about the December and January delays but as I said, sometimes dates have to be met or it’s a never ending circle of missed dates. As for your ‘just went off the rails’ quip, please avoid passive aggressive pokes in the dark…you have your opinion and I mine.

Well, well, my first iNovae BB nemesis! It wasn’t a poke, I was trying to sum up what I felt you were doing with that paragraph which starting from the continued use of a mistaken pretense and “went off the rails”, continuing extraneous to the argument you were answering–you were focusing on the potential range of “possible” in response to my argument which was focused on the illegitimate use of “December” as a deadline. I can agree with your point. Sometimes dates have to be met–you shouldn’t push deadlines beyond a certain point. I should sheepishly apologize for my ignorance on one point going into this discussion–I got distracted reading through the latest update and navigated away, coming back instead to this topic, so I was unaware we were so surely going into March. I still say December may feel like a deadline to you, but this is a little bit of common insanity you will have to overcome in order for us to co-exist peacefully. :stuck_out_tongue: Would it strain our already strained relationship if I pointed out that “feeling pretty good” about the end of February a “deadline” does not make either?

Really? lol. Nobody gets nothing pass you. Perhaps the insanity here is believing dates are an abstract concept that no one should be beholden…anyway, enough of this silliness. Troll on if you wish but it gets us nowhere…

Well, that does really push the limit in ridiculously oversized engine exhausts.

I feel like I’m looking at the spaceship version of cloud strife’s buster sword

Nah, the bombers actually tow asteroids to their targets, so they need huge engines. [/joking]
More likely, it’s a converted industrial ship, given SFC lore.

Downloading and applying patches manually will be so nostalgic

While I’d prefer to have a launcher that handles the updates for me, I don’t see the big deal with a manual download.

The manual patch should be fairly simple: delete old folder, place new folder.

As long as we have something by the end of February, that’s fine by me.

I’m of the same opinion that the size of the engine exhausts concern me. For me it is about consistency of art direction. If every ship has very large engine exhausts then I can see that (although it is not my preference). But if some ships have really big exhausts and others really small ones and both have similar flight characteristics it starts to feel incoherent. To be fair the Helion also had fairly large engine exhausts as well. It will be interesting to see if this is a consistent feature of the game universe.

I get where this sentiment comes from, but at the same time, how consistent are vehicle designs in the real world? In the consumer market, a Saab isn’t visually consistent with a Rolls isn’t visually consistent with a Jeep isn’t… Commercially, a Bombardier jet is visually distinct from a Boeing jet, a Bombardier C-series looks radically different from a Dash-8, and a Boeing 737 is so obviously not a Pelican at first glance it’s kind of shocking.

Different designers, different manufacturers, different design epochs (a 2007 Pontiac looks basically nothing like a 1970 Pontiac) lead to an incredibly heterogeneous take on even vehicles with the same name.

Again, I realize that in a game, the visual design of things is meant to communicate more than the visual design of things in the real world, but it’s not like it isn’t something we deal with at almost every instance of every day of all of our lives.

I mean, the physics of needlessly oversized engine nozzles makes me cringe, but rule of cool, I guess? Plus, they do kind of vaguely hint at the crazy, oversized wheels on high capacity industrial vehicles used at mines and large construction sites.

I don’t really get your car analogy as you’re comparing cosmetics whilst engine thruster sizes should be a practical consideration. As you say here:

I don’t mind when there is a notional in-game reason for the oversized thrusters. If they behave in a different manner, as a tractor handles differently to a sports car, then that makes sense.

The engine thrusters on this particular ship are drifting toward the realms of science fantasy rather than science fiction.

I just hope it gets to carry a giant load …

like a giant bomb or torpedo/missile.

Depending on who you talk to, thruster size is just a cosmetic aspect of the game. I mean, I don’t fall into that camp, obviously, but Devi’s Advocate and all that.

What’s the analogue of different terrains in space? Warp? Maybe giant exhaust nozzles result in some kind of warp advantage? Because, and I realize this is counter to the popular perception, in regular situations, super wide nozzles like that cause a huge reduction in thrust.

At the same time, they convey the exact opposite message.

Looks awesome!

I can’t wait. I’m so excited.
