I know you didn’t ask me, but personally while team colour lasers are interesting, red and green just makes it look too much like Star Wars (some people would love this, others would criticize it for copying), and what happens when you use non-energy weapons?
Yes, it looks like star wars a bit then, but I think it would improve the combat in the prototype, I meant it as a temporary thing for the prototype only.
Still, you have to consider the perspective of the prospective pledger. They see a new indie space game with red and green lasers, you know what their initial thought is likely to be.
But isn’t it better when they think that it looks more like the epic star wars battle scenes? Most science fiction worlds borrow heavily from each other. Its like elves and orcs in fantasy…
I don’t doubt that some will feel that way, but I’m erring on the side of caution that the negative effect might outweigh the positive. Not sure if that’s pessimism or realism.
Hm, I think nobody would un-pledge because the laser colors for a single weapon in the prototype changed. But I think it would make for better gamplay in the prototype and cooler visuals, possibly attracting more people.
I’m an optimist.
Yeah I’m not talking about people who have already pledged, I’m talking about people only just learning about the project. “Prospective”.
I think there are more people right now that say that the combat looks “boring”, then there would be people saying “looks like a star wars copy”. But I agree to disagree.
You know, I think it could work. If a video was made where the devs explicitly and strongly emphasized that it was specifically tweaked to make it look like a Star Wars battle, but that it’s not representative of the final game, then I think that would be well received.
Just a tiny suggestion: I don’t know what the colour settings in the xml are, but it might be worth trying to make the laser colour a lighter shade of red, so that it’s brighter and more visible and looks less star-wars-y.
Jepp, it could definitely be done much better, it was just a quick edit without knowing exactly what I was doing…

My thinking was that they show the new laser colors during the next live stream, then they have the opportunity to explain their reasoning for the change and they could state that its just a temporary prototype thing.
Orange vs white?
Blue vs magenta
It seems to me that the most effective means of getting pledges so far has been through big names promoting Infinity. Chris Roberts and Scott Manley spring to mind.
If I-Novae can find more people like them who are interested in I:B it’ll probably help loads.
I’m never switching back to white lasers voluntarily. :
i hope another popular youtuber gets his/her hands on the prototype, we need a buff right now…
Green lasers have always been my favorite.
How about lasers that actually correspond to their wavelength having different damage effects. High damage would probably be hifreq blue to white lasers. You could have redder lasers be some sort of target painter in the form of heat or handwave that it’s radio EW to jam sensors of the ship or some crap.
Let the colours be predictive of their intended effect and less so than just looking cool.
Obviously, it should be green vs purple.
And one side is restricted to energy weapons while the other is restricted to missiles.
Welp, I personally despise the whole offensively-neon energy weapons look. Those white blaster shots are cool as they are. Maybe try a more subtle tint rather than the ‘HAVE THIS COLOUR THAT’S BRIGHT AND IN YOUR FACE NOW BURNED INTO YOUR EYEBALLS!!! YEAH!!!’ look you’re going with?
