The SFC doesn’t seem like it would name its ships with Latin words or anything really fancy. How about Anvil? Or Star Hammer?
Agreed. SFC Hammer mark 42, without the Latin.
Not in love with Hammer but it will do.
Na, leave out the mark stuff. It makes it sound pretentious. Since Hammer seems over used but fits it so well why don’t we try tacking other words to it to freshen it up a bit. Star Hammer, Sky Hammer, Jackhammer, Hammerhead,…
The “Pug”.
It looks small and sort of… ugly-cute.
I think it would be used.
From Wikipedia:
According to The Star Trek Encyclopedia, the registry number “NCC-1701” was devised by Matt Jefferies, art director of the first Star Trek series, inspired by an old science fiction cover that Gene Roddenberry liked, with a starship flying through space. Jefferies, who was a pilot, based NCC on 20th century aircraft registration codes. In such 20th century usage, an “N” first letter refers to an aircraft registered in the USA. A “C” for a second letter refers to a civil aircraft. Jefferies added a second “C” because he thought it looked better.[1]
The Franz Joseph Blueprints, the book The Making of Star Trek and a handful of Star Trek novels state that NCC is an initialism for “Naval Construction Contract”.
In an interview with the BBC, Jefferies explained that NC was a US designation for commercial vehicles. The Russians used CC CC. He concluded that as common opinion was that any future major space projects would be a combined effort, he would use a combined designation NCC. The 1701 had two functions, it represented the first (01) ship of a 17th federation cruiser design, and that the digits were unlikely to be misread, unlike 6, 8, or 9.[2]
That’s a registry number not the class of the ship. NCC-1701 is a specific Constitution class ship. Yes I completely agree registry numbers should be used. But I think arbitrarily adding a Mk# to a class of ship sounds pretentious.
Unless you have different but very similar ships that are called “whatever mk1” and “whatever mk2” in the game, I don’t think that MK# designations shouldn’t be used.
Back on the bomber name subject:
Hadron
Titan
Copperhead
Borax
Obsidian
Actually that could be a great name for an SFC bomber: “Whatever mk1”.
On a more serious note, think ahead a few years. Infinity proper gets funded. The Quest For Earth is completed and the official launch announced. An old Hammer mk. 37 is found drifting through space, it’s flight computer empty except for one file infinitely looping, writing the following pattern on the targeting screen…
Or, ye know, some other indication that the universe of the game didn’t spontaneously appear out of nothing, created by the hand of a Creator of a higher plane, even if that is in fact how games are made. I’m a big fan of the theory about the Universe being created 5000 years ago and dinosaurs-fossils and old light being created with it just to confuse anyone of a different opinion.
The Jewish universe is 5,000 years old. The Hindu is infinite.
I’d rather we stay out of religion.
Please keep religion out of this.
Back to naming: How about Halberd? Or Nova?
Religion? I was just suggesting what might be a good backstory for a game.
Came here to suggest Anvil. Seriously, it looks like an Anvil.
Damn that ship looks awesome!
How about “Brutus”?
Would prefer Knucklehead to Hammerhead (I mean, it’s a big ugly bomber built to fly right up to bigger ships and ‘punch them in the face’, metaphorically speaking), but that would probably be a pilot nickname rather than military designation or manufacturer name.
In fact, do we even have info on the naming conventions being used for battlescape? As in, who (lore wise) is naming these ships? Is that different for the three factions?
Would be cool to have the manufacturers/government name Centy ships, The military who orders them name Deltan ships and crew/pilots in the fleet nickname SFC ships.
Anything that makes each of the three scions stand apart from each other in terms of their respective philosophies, more than just the look of their ships, would be a welcome sight, at least in my opinion.
No, whatever name feels right for a given ship, there is no faction ship naming convention…
And on a side note: My gifts for taking the survey.
- Anti wrinkle cream
- Weight loss system
- Electronic cigarets.
So I’m wrinkled, fat and might as well just get cancer.
I know you guys said you weren’t using conventions to come up with the ship’s names themselves, that wasn’t really what I was asking…
l mean, ships don’t just spontaneously develop names in this universe by themselves, right?
Art team wise, we have no per faction ship naming convention. Lore-wise, we have no ship naming convention. The ship names, for I:B at least, will come from the dev team and/or the community without any backstory. I:B has a very limited backstory. We’re not relying much, if at all, on any story material written for the MMO. We simply do not need that for I:B, nor do we want to get backed into any corners before a more professional writing team can oversee the MMO backstory integration. In fact, the only story information that really matters at this point is contained in the faction guidelines. Yes, perhaps each faction might choose different names for ships due to their culture, but tbh, we’re not holding firm to any type of ship naming rule set.
It really is as simple as coming up with a fitting name for how the ship looks/functions. If the community desires to bring the faction cultures into the naming of ships, that’s fine by me, in the end, we just want names that fit the ship as best as possible, for its looks as well as its role in the Battlescape.
If these ships are intended to be in the main game after BS they should follow the conventions of the faction that supposedly built them. Unless they’re universal and not actually faction designed ships.
So I guess Battlescape is non-cannon and any lore that is added is subject to change?
Oh well, was hoping for a little more of a fleshed out backstory after sitting through over half a decade of fan-theory and conjecture (can hardly blame you guys for the mess of ideas we came up with), but I see why you’d be hesitant if you think you might be held to anything you say now to the point of detracting from Battlescape somewhere down the line, or other future projects such as Infinity-Proper.
Just so long as the factions are fleshed out in the finished game, have legitimate grievances and motivations to be fighting each other and the writers you hire don’t consider the existence of grey areas where their opposing philosophies clash can equate to; “We have a bulk discount on all our mass graves from how much puppy murdering we do!”, (You know, the Eve-Online style of writing), then I’ll be happy.
Getting back on topic… oh yeah, sorry about going so far off-topic.
I would have thought a name like “Hammerhead” would imply some sort of stalker-type role as a ship name. (Sure, non-specialisation means it could be fitted up into such a role, but the looks for it don’t quite gel with the idea in my head, would have expected something with that name to be bigger.)
The ship looks bulky, like it’s designed to go after bigger targets than itself sporting greater range weapons. Like it’s built to take a lot of punishment getting weapon payloads to their destination without the manoeuvrability required to dodge it all.
If you’re going to name it just for the slight visual similarity rather than any of the connotations that the name brings, I guess Hammerhead is fine, but it just falls flat when you want to look into any meaning behind it, even from just that visual standpoint.
Hmm… thinking back to my last suggestion, maybe ‘Crony’, ‘Goon’ or ‘Thug’ would work better than ‘Knucklehead’. heh, I always was a fan of self-deprecating ship names.
Would vote for Anvil from all the previous names listed if such a ballot were being held.
