Seldon Crisis - Foundation Space MMO

I got high readings on my Sarcastometer from Keiths post and interpreted it in that way.

The KS video shows nothing and tells nothing about this game, the game they want to create …

I’m an Asimov fan and it would be nice to have a game that is from that universe, Foundation series was really good, but KS doesn’t look too good, not sure if they will make it. As for the rights, they might have an agreement with whoever is holding Asimov rights to use a little of the background story, don’t think any serious writer would rip-off another in this way and think that he will get away with it.

Well, a financially successful author probably wouldn’t… but if this Riccardo Simone they’ve got to write for them is of the “starving artist” variety, it’s not impossible they could set it up so they’d get away with it:

  1. Offer starving artist food and shelter for writing the book he’s always wanted to write, a book which completely by coincidence shares a lot of names and places with some written by another author.
  2. Ask starving artist to give you the IP rights to make a game based purely on his book, not any others. Be sure to explicitly mention that the starving artist claims to hold all rights to the IP in question, and that it’s a transfer of property rather than a license.
  3. Repeatedly state that starving artist is writing a book, and oh yeah he happens to be a fan of another author.

Step 3 is protected by the 1st Amendment (and various similar laws in the rest of the civilized world); step 2 is perfectly legal, for the game makers, if you get a good enough lawyer; and step 1 will at worst result in an already starving artist being sued for everything he owns (not much). Throw in some funny Italian personal bankruptcy laws, the promise of future employment, and it’s not impossible it could work.

Just really rather unlikely considering their demonstrated English ability. Writing on your website that you’re basing your game on the Foundation series would probably defeat my diabolical scheme.

Yep, incredibly crummy. Bad composition, terrible camera angles, didn’t show off the scale at all, slow-paced, didn’t give any sense of movement or speed, didn’t have any dogfighting between smaller ships.

That and nothing about this seems to have anything to do with the foundation books beyond the name. Is a single crescent moon painted on the side of an old empire ship really that much to ask?

*Don’t get me wrong, I’d love a true Foundation series MMO with twitch based controls. The reason I’m “hating” as you say, is because they rushed their entire kickstarter and ‘done ****ed it up’ to the point where there’s no hope of it ever getting made.

I read “over 20 thousands of years” and they’d lost me. If you can’t get basic grammar correct in your Kickstarter video I have very little confidence in your ability to create a quality game.

Honestly - English might not be their native language.

Just saying.

So what?

Either bloody learn to use proper English, or find a non-English crowdfunding website. It’s a matter of basic professional behaviour.

Their website lists their address as 601 International House, London. - International house is a language school.
Even if English wasn’t their first language they should have had someone proof read it and I’m guessing in a language school there’d be plenty of people they could ask.

Woah. I think that’s a bit much!
Asking a native speaker to proof read stuff would display professionalism and intelligence. Effectively saying ‘learn English or bugger off’ displays the opposite. (And judging by the address, they’re trying the learning bit.)

… be the commercial equivalent of what I just said. I don’t expect the actual company to use any human language, just the people working for it.

Well, seems Asimov’s Estate did have a problem with this copyright violation, didn’t look like they were going to make the target anyway.

Knock Knock. Who’s there ?
