New blog post - musings of an independent game developer

That’s a jab in the heart on a personal level, if Keith cares, he will feel it. Not sure if that was or is needed.

Keith kinda came out of nowhere, infinityadmin didn’t post as much and keith started doing most of the forum posting. Was always a bit odd. You know, im pretty sure this is good evidence that he’s a wolf.

Oh shit wrong thread.

I’m necro’ing this topic as @XeonXT_ has posted an update on the LT forums that sheds a lot more light on the psychological pressures he was under at the time. As @Kichae mentions above, it’s a discussion that is valuable to everyone involved in games development.

Here’s a link to his post:

I can completely relate to what he has written as I went through something similar myself in my twenties. I think it is a combination of too much time with your own thoughts, a very active imagination and an ability to make links of perception that are outside of the realm of normal discussion.

He’s obviously still recovering and I imagine that reading the progress of other projects such as this one will be comforting to him. When everything becomes too much and it all feels like it’s on your shoulders it’s a good tonic to take a step back and see that the world is still carrying on fine without you.

Hopefully he has some good friends around him because the best medicine is laughter and being with people who are not afraid to tease you or take you too seriously is important.

I clicked on the link in the OP, and it set off the alarms for my anti-virus, claiming it had malware. False positive?

False positive.

It’s just his forum post.

For those who haven’t been followed @XeonXT_'s progress on Limit Theory, he disappeared sometime in, I think, late February, without much of a trace, and without much in the way of warming (save for the talk at year’s end about changing his devlog schedule). He finally returned to his forums again at the end of May.

I can also relate to much of what Josh has said, though I’ve never suffered a bout of mania. The parts about having difficulty communicating with people he felt he was disappointing, though? I could have written the same thing a couple of year, or even a year ago (or, hell, even now), as I’ve suffered repeated crises of confidence over the last two-and-a-half years. I can only imagine how much accepting thousands of dollars from people would have amplified those feelings.

I’m really, really glad that Josh has again spoken openly about his ordeal, and that he’s been actively getting help.

I’m sorry that Josh had to go through all that, but I’m very happy that he’s come through okay. I’m sure he’s much the wiser as a result. He’s so obviously a good kid. The fact that he came back and described such a difficult personal episode in public is just confirmation of that.

Remember that our minds and bodies are not capable of taking an infinite amount of punishment, so, like a marathon runner, we need to find a pace that allows us to keep going until the end of the race. That may be a cliche sentiment, but it’s also one that Josh forgot about in his earnestness to pursue his passions and his obligations.

I checked the campaign results. $187,000. That’s a bunch.

I’m sure not one of his backers wanted him to work so hard that he stopped being Josh for several months.

You guys gonna make me talk…

From my experience where Josh is right now, it’s really just the beginning of his ordeal. Maybe he got lucky and his episode is the only one he will experience in a long time or in his life. Others are not that lucky… It takes years to heal a fractured mind and the recovery is really never over.

It does take courage to publicly admit to any mental health issues and I’m not even sure that his decision to make that public is a good one, we get tagged by people and those tags don’t really go away, you become a stereotype and people treat you as such. Maybe it’s just simpletons, but we all are in some regard. At least he didn’t reveal his diagnosis…

Thing to note is that he got out of “rehab” or whatever you wanna call it recently, nice meds and nice treatment, I fear his optimism is somewhat propped. I wish him all the best and hope that he’s a lucky one that is back on his feet within a year or few.
