How much realism in the Infinity Universe?

What dictionary are you using? I don’t think Dictionary.com is very out of date.

Dead worlds.

There are two dwarf planets between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres and vista I think. About the size of Sol, three, one. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ya I called in on the radio. The guy that made the current definition of planets hates big enough to be round. And he said it was impossible for two gas giants to be in the same orbit. Because he said so!

I hope infinity gets realistic regarding scale:

WTF… is there any chance to simply >link< an image?

Well you wanted a word to be overwhelmingly widespread before it was a word, right?

Use defines language, if everyone in a given community know what a word means then that is what the word means. I mean hell, there are roughly twice as many people registered for the KSP forums as there are people who speak Greenlandic (any dialect) world-wide.

If professional use mattered, I doubt hangry or adorkable would be up for consideration for the American Heritage dictionary (source).

Have no fear, double precision is here!

Realistic scale is pretty much what Infinity is and always has been about, in terms of new technology, and the reason why it has yet to reach alpha…

We already are realistic regarding scale.

Surely Test Card F would have been a better choice? :stuck_out_tongue:

Lets just hope that no game will ever try realistic futuristic space combat, because that wouldn’t be much fun at all

A realistic space shooter wouldn’t be much fun at all, certainly (excluding rocketpunk “rockets and no transistors” settings, of course). But a realistic strategy or grand strategy space combat game, that could be much more interesting.
A Through Struggle, the Stars-like combat simulator, or a Paradox game set in a realistic far future, who wouldn’t want to play that?

I agree with ThornEel.

Hoping for something to not happen just because you think it won’t work is … kind of a strange opinnion. You don’t have to play it. What if it is someones dream game? Even if it was a space shooter there might be people who will enjoy the experience. Sure the Studio will have struggle to keep affloat but there are always one team hobby programmers out there.

Probably some kind of joke i didn’t get … ha

Speak for yourself. A game with realistic space combat would be awesome. It’d be a horrible shooter, yes, but that’s what strategy games are for.

Realistic space combat wouldn’t be a shooter, and it would not be done by humans.
I think anyone who claims they want realistic combat in space hasn’t really given it enough thought about what that would really mean.

Watch drones duke it out from a monitor simulator.

Or they are going full honest to Heinlein rocketpunk : nuclear engines and no transistors! With this combination, you can actually have realistic single-seat light combat crafts (aka space fighters).
Have fun imagining a believable future without transistor, though - or what an alternate present/future would look like if we had never invented it.

That’s pretty much what Supreme Commander (and its brethen, Zero-K/Spring-based games and Planetary Annihilation) are about, if you look at it this way.

I would still play it over Spreadsheets Online. And I like Spreadsheets Online…

Why is anyone even arguing about what combat will/should be like? We had the ICP a long time ago, which gave a pretty good idea the direction they want to go (IMHO).

This is correct, ICP will be the basis for our flight/combat models (with some initial changes).

Although weird this may sound, I don’t want the game to be like ICP. The ICP was fun, back in 200*. It’s been a decade since, and I guess my standards have changed. We have so many “point and shoot” space games out there (cough Elite, Star Ciziten cough). I’d love a space game where combat is actually complicated, and not about taping down your LMB. (I love Spreadsheet Online, and 10 out of 10 would pick over space dogfights and Starwars lazorz.)

A century is 100 years. Its been nearly a decade.

But yeah, what attracted me to Infinity the MMO was never the FPS control but the scale.

I’m not against FPS control but it does have inevitable implications on the number of players that can be in an area.
However, I am aware that for some members of the community the FPS control is a massive attraction.

Infinity was conceived as an FPS, I really doubt that is going to change.

Can you detail what you didn’t like in the ICP? It was a crude approximation of an arena game, being a netcode prototype. So the early models and simplistic gameplay (mining, missile, shoot-a-battleship-until-it-goes-boom) can be seen as placeholders.
OTOH, the actual flight/shoot model was pretty great. It was more than “point-and-shoot”, as the ships were very mobile (50g?), and the full newtonian gave multi-dogfight a high skill ceiling by itself and great feeling IMHO.
