This is the future. Couldn’t people have some sort of Coilgun or Railgun that fires nukes at ludicrous speeds? No need to dig inside an asteroid when you can shoot it with a giant gun.
Not that I’m arguing we should have destructible asteroids or giant nukes, just saying that when you start having giant hyperspace traveling combat vessels, many things become possible.
We already have those! to a very very very lesser degree. That being said Mass cannon would make more sense as a Rail/coil gun would ideally be spewing out big bundles of metal death rather then precision warheads. Regardless enough energy could split anything given the right circumstances.
Why not magic space rocks made out of Unobtanium? That stuff’s so hard you can’t obtain it… ha…ha… kill me
And, for the record, I’m not talking down to people. If this were a discussion about, say, graphics cards, no one would think telling someone a CPU isn’t a GPU was “rude” or “talking down to other people”. I’m not going to apologize for caring about stuff you don’t. While to you space may be some sort of magic sci-fi fairy fantasy land where anything is possible if we just clap our hands and believe, it has been my life, thank you very much, and it behaves by rules that I have dedicated that life of mine to understanding.
I didn’t say “don’t allow destructable asteroids”, by the way. I said they were immersion breaking to people who know better. Because they point out, loud and screaming, that the world the game is set in is faker than Metropolis.
For the record, basketball sized chunks of ice aren’t asteroids, any more than the Moon is a star, or you are an antelope. While there’s no formally agreed lower limit on the size of an asteroid, the term generally refers to chunks stony or stony-metallic naturally forming space debris with a diameter of a few 10s of metres or larger. So, like, chunks of rock the size of the Hellion or bigger. Your spacey ice cubes are meteoroids.
Blow up all the damn meteoroids you want.
Sure. If we’re running with the mythos that ship armour a few metres thick has the same cohesion as a 50 metre thick chunk of rock and iron, then it makes sense to have Walmart selling sidearms that fire off kiloton yield ammo. But if that’s the case, ships should also be able to ram into planets at anything short of warp speeds and survive intact, and any time a ship fires a non-explosive style weapon they should be launched to the next moon. I will happily play that game. It sounds like fun. But I’m going to say something if it’s not internally consistent.
TLDNR, you always talk down to people, make them feel like idiots and insult their intelligence, sure you do have a point sometimes, but there is no need to make the person feel like an idiot for not knowing something or getting some aspect of their point wrong.
I’m sorry you, and others, choose to read my comments in such a voice. Telling people they’re wrong when, well, they’re wrong isn’t “talking down” to them, though.
Yes, telling a cripple they are a cripple and then explaining why exactly they are a cripple and further pointing to the defected body part in order to precisely argue the extent of the defect is perfectly normal behavior for you then.
Right. Because I regularly point out things about people that they have no control over, and go out of my way to try and make them feel bad about themselves for it.
Can I point out that you have no idea as to whether I’m able-bodied or not?
Look, I’m sorry if you don’t like having someone who’s studied in the field pointing out problems with what people say about the field, but, again, if this were about graphics cards or coding practices or something, no one would think I was off base in the least. You can go about Wanting To Believe all you like, but you don’t get to shame me into silence because I’m killing your fantasy boner.
No, and I’ve never come close to broaching the subject. I’ve certainly never said anything to you, or anyone else for that matter, that even grazed on personal body issues or personal abilities. To suggest that I’ve said or done anything that comes even close to the same scale is wildly offensive.
Ok, then where have I specifically spoken down to someone? How does it measure up to pointing out that they’re “crippled”? Please, show me the error of my ways. Because all I see is that I’ve told people they’re wrong about things they don’t care enough to be right about.
You should look up the definition of a metaphor, it was said in order to invoke a though and emotion that I usually feel when you are arguing with me, since you are obviously unable to even identify that anything you say is even midely offensive and insulting, the metaphor was over the top on purpose.
Generally i don’t think it makes sense to assume someone speaking factually is talking down to you. Usually they arent and its not their job to spend extra effort to ensure you don’t take things the wrong way. You are the keeper of your own feelings.
you guys should probably stop this chain though the derail is already pretty severe
Well, I’m genuinely and sincerely sorry if I’ve ever made you, or anyone else, feel less than able. It has never been, and never will be, my intent. Apparently I’m not communicating my tone as well as I think I am.
So you are still going with your fact based theory that no ring rocks can be broken up into smaller pieces by projectiles, lasers, plasma and any other post-FTL weaponry?
Well this isn’t a forum about astronomy, we are discussing a game here.
Being nitpicky about terms nobody here really cares to differentiate doesn’t make it okay to constantly shit on other peoples opinions. You didn’t bother to correct people when the star wars video and the everspace video were posted that clearly didn’t show asteroids but the coolness factor of destroyable game environments. In my previous post I clarified that people obviously were mostly talking about smaller particles such as those in planetary rings. You choose to ignore that part of my comment and instead gave in to your urge to remind everyone that you are an expert, while simultaniously insinuating that us unknowledgeable people are living in a “fairy fantasy land”.
To me this seems pretty rude.
You are constantly debating people on realism and scientific accuracy of their suggestions, didn’t you notice that this is a science fiction game? The whole concept of space shooters is pretty much ridiculous, but people are willing to suspend disbelief because its fun. In the context of the comments in this topic you should have been able to realise that people don’t always use scientific terms correctly, the right response to this would be a simple clarifying piece of information and then discussing the things people are obviously talking about.
The rings of saturn are mostly made up of particles between 1 cm and 10 meters. These particles are destroyable even with current day weaponry. Kichae is hellbend on the term “asteroid” which describes smaller planetoids.
Obviously nobody was really talking about that.
