A bit over 2 hours to go, livestream starts 20 min before.
Also, since when do I need a proxy to view the livestream? What copyright claims could possible prevent Germany from viewing the stream? Who the hell managed to block out non Americans from a rocket launch? I’m a bit stupefied by that… ah well.
Yeah, the Youtube livestream was blocked for a bit on my side of the ocean, as Lomsor stated probably due to the stupid GEMA. Everything working now! The others were still running fine but Youtube has in the past always been best from a performance standpoint so it’s my preferred place to watch.
And no worries, I have… means of getting around internet blocks.
EDIT: Oh well, no go because of the weather. Next try tomorrow at the same time.
Well, launch was successful! Landing wasn’t however – rocket landed on the barge but too hard, survival of the stage unlikely. Here’s hoping we’ll get to see the video again later!
Thanks for the updates xamino! I’m working(tutoring) right now, but I was able to watch the launch with other students which was cool. Super bummed that the landing wasn’t 100% successful. I’m excited to see the video once the ship returns. From the sound of it, it came in slow enough to “land” but hard enough to break things and subsequently unland…
Ohhh sad panda…
It looks like it is really struggling to control itself.
wind perhaps…
Those little fins aren’t much help when near hovering speed.
Gimbal on engine is huge that is great, but it is still balancing the broom on your palm.
It could you some small engines on top (not just rcs thrusters)
but they know what to do, it will work next time … hopefully
It came in really well but somehow drifted a lot to the left side of the image towards the end.
Translating isn’t really a power this rocket has … or most vehicles. I’m impressed by that last maneuver it attempted.
Waiting for the first successful test.
Maybe there should be a ring of pillows around the center of the landing pad in case it tips after landing Like safety pillows that pop out when needed.
Still looks like progress from the previous landing attempt.
could be the thrust reflected from surface created some unexpected wind.
(similar to helicopter air cushion- info here)
My guess is it was not about to hit the bullseye, so the computer decided to make rather quick adjustment.
It is this barge that’s the problem.
They try to make it perfect and cool from the start.
They should have land it on some big flat place, the rocket is “precise enough” if you ask me.
But instead they are going for most difficult landing possible - small and moving platform…
Actually, what happened is that one of the gimbal throttles was stuck, which is why it overreacted and then tried to correct the error. I’d link the tweet but it has since been deleted, so here is the corresponding reddit link.
I was just about to post the video. It is SOOO cool. It looks really good in 1080p as well. That one little thruster tries so hard but just can’t do it!
Advantage to attempting to land on a barge rather than “some big flat place” is that there are very few naturally occurring “big flat places” east of Cape Canaveral where people wouldn’t be upset if a spaceship exploded because someone forgot to put in enough hydraulics fluid.
And by “upset” I mean “pressure congress and the UN to permanently ban any attempt at such landings”.
On the other hand, if a rocket blows up while trying to land on a small(ish) barge in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, everyone goes “hey, cool video, when’s the next one?”
Two things! First, listen to this while reading my second thing.
Second thing!
Gwynne Shotwell( COO of SpaceX) has said that they hope to land their next attempt on land! So we can stop bickering over that. Whether they will have approval, or what hurdles they have to cross I’m not sure.
Edit: The ULA has released their idea for a “reusable stage” and it involves detaching the engine, inflating a heatshield to slow it down. Releasing parachutes, and grabbing the parachutes midair via helichopter. Here’s a link to their flowchart.
I hope they continue with the autonomous barge for a while. I want to see that future video where the barge and upright engine float into port…like a boss
Also this tweet sounds futuristic as *****:
“Droneship is fine. No hull breach and repairs are minor. Impact overpressure is closer to a fast fire than an explosion.” - Elon Musk
