It works on their forum front page without applying category filters.
Yeah mattk, I think we are going to have to be the anti-shit-posting-league.
Well, we are âThe Old Guardâ protecting the old ways.
I must admit, the disapperance of the old forums was a hard pill to swallow. Veritable books worth of discussion, hours (hundreds) of typing, swept away. Iâve been a fairly inactive lurker since then, checking back every month or so for signs of the KS. When I see a name I recognize from the old days, I may send a PM or two just to check-in and say Hi.
If ITQFE ever comes into being, I will seek out ye giants of olde.
You shouldnât be afraid that we will be swept away or that things will degrade or anything when new faces start showing up. I was a frequent poster over at (the now defunct) Blizzforums.com a couple of years before starcraft 2 was announced. In those years it was a quiet slumbering forum with little but good content made by a small but tight group. That changed of course when starcraft 2 was announced and the forums were invaded by loads of strange new users.
And while there came some ânoobsâ or âbad postersâ or whatever you like to call them, there were also many really great posters among the newcomers. Some who had lurked around the forums for a while but others completely random. The best part was the action and enthusiasm they brought. Sure some old topics were revised were the same old tried and failed ideas were discussed again, but on the whole they brought lots of new interesting takes and perspectives on the ideas and lots of them went on to become respected and liked posters. Many gained loads more knowledge then us old ones.
Basing my opinion on my experience with other communities if all goes well yeah, shitposts will come⌠but you shouldnât be so much against it.
Just ignore the shitposts, they may be stupid, they may be (apparently) useless, but they make the community grow by sharing and having a particularly intense activity. If every stupid post gets attacked (at least, in the first months) people will start to think Infinity:Battlescapeâs community is made by âa bunch of elitist faegsâ and some people could avoid the game like smallpox.
Could someone please define: âShitpostâ?
Some examples, so I can make myself an image what you are talking about?
Well, if it looks like shit, if it smells like shitâŚ
theres a good image for you
As far as I can tell, people call âshitpostsâ those kind of threads which are useless for many reasons, like:
- Being copy/pastes of a precedent discussion which wasnât old (2-3 days old AT MAX, a couple hours happens too);
- Jokes (yeah, posting an entire forum thread just to make a joke);
- Clickbaits, misleading titles;
- Toxic threads, as in complains without discussion, âwitch huntsâ et similia;
This kind of posts can be managed in relatively small communities and the amount of these tends to increase as the community goes on. Some communities like E:D reddit have been capable of limiting them (until some time ago, 6/10 posts were about funny names in the game)⌠Other communities are overrun, for example Destiny reddit with those âAdvice postsâ which undoubtly went out of hand, or some MOBAs community with the general Toxicity.
While they are indeed negative because they donât offer anything to the community or to the development of a game (exceptions are present, obviously), they tend to generate alot of activity which in a way or another is still some form of advertisement.
E.g.: User X shares a cool screnshot he took in the demo. User Y like the post and does the same. During a short span of time, the forum will be overrun by screenshots⌠which isnât really a good thing considering that many will look similiar BUT⌠some screenshots will obviously be shared out of the forum. Free advertisement.
Strange but true, this would apply also to Toxic posts, which make people run towards it to comment âhow wrong that guy isâ
Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to share my thoughts and experiences, as admin of the biggest Italian Destiny Community (which Iâm the first to admit contains alot of âShitpostsâ, but that is a longer story, can get deeper if anyone is interested)
You have to watch out for that group of elitist who have there very own way of spelling!!!
Jokes (yeah, posting an entire forum thread just to make a joke); Ummm is this what you mean?
Yeah, damn those 'Muricans and theys crayzay spelluns!
No, starting a new discussion/opening a new thread just to make a stupid joke is often flagged as âshitpostâ. Or at least, thatâs what I see around.
Been checking on those forums for the last two days and Iâm leaning on classifying 80% of the posts as âshitpostâ, making the forum a shitforum.
First off 80% of the posts are a single sentence or three, thus the discussions looks more like a chat room than an actual forum. Then there is the volume problem, the forum moves so fast that you canât read most of the posts by being away for more than a few hours. Admin posts are no more visible than shitposts, leaving you with reading a lot of stuff before you find something near official. And forget about having a meaningful discussion that stays on the front page and has all the people that could meaningfully participate, because nothing stays on the front page, front page is for a 2 hour glory of a brand new topic. Getting something to stay on the front page requires volume of posts and not quality, a bit sad really.
I fear we are in for a shit stormâŚ
Most of us just enabeled the auto tracking feature for new threads, me included. Because nothing on here is really is too annoying and I try to get a glimpse of everything. But when your fear comes true. Why not disable the feature?
Only if someone explicit calls you, you will get pulled into a toppic. Sure you may miss some topics, but if you enter a shitpost you can leave it immediately and it wonât be tracked. Good post on the other hand will show up in the unread tab.
And some more categories are needed. At the moment itâs ok for on and off topic to be in gerneral ⌠but later on?
The ability to manually hide threads would go a long way. As is, itâs not neccasarry, (though i would hide those spammy forum âgamesâ) . People could just hide certain threads they know they will never read or participate in.
Forum games, like the wolf game or describe the user above in three words?
Or The Banning Game, Corrupt a Wish, Picture WarsâŚ
At least we will all remember each other (mostly) and be able to lend a slight amount of sanity to the explosion of new topics that will inevitably be created.
On another note, I appear to have lost my ability to see the Lounge. Is this because Iâve been relatively inactive recently?
Yes, you can lose trust level 3.
by spammy forum games i meant those three words things. hardly even games, i donât know what they are, post padders?
Perhaps, but I donât post to up my post count, I could care less. I do it because every so often there is one that makes me laugh pretty goodâŚbesides it builds community!
