Dark Theme Userscript and CSS for the Forums

Does anyone fancy trying to optimise and improve this dark skin. The Stylish userstyle CSS to v004 from post 29 above. My CSS skills are not up to the job.

Anyone have any news regarding a proper I:B dark theme for us here. I’m still using my modded OP userstyle in Stylish (FF, Opera and Chrome), not very optimised though . After the little update it still seems to work ok, a few little changes.

Stylish userstyle CSS to v004 - LINK

Instructions for Stylish add-on:
Copy CSS from link into a new Stylish style for this site, name it and save.

Mighty want to also add these urls:

https://forums.inovaestudios.com/*

For some reason doesn’t work for me on Opera … maybe I’m doing something wrong. It also throws errors.

I’ve been using Opera (latest) for a year now just to take a break from FF and Chrome. Works well for me. I ignore the errors because I do not understand them. But also added the extra urls as you can see in the screen shot below. Some pages of this site just didn’t seem to use the style until added below.

My v004 CSS has some custom bits added to the top which are commented for ease of use. But I’m not skilled enough to go through it all and correct errors and also reduce it down to just what’s needed so its optimised.

I always had hope that someone skilled would take an optimise pass at it and also solve the errors.

It would be great if we had an official dark theme for the forums. Can the devs not attach one, surely this forum (discourse) has dark themes it can install. Can we not have a good discourse dark theme installed?

Until then, this is the best we have as far as I know, either the OP userscript or my v004 CSS for use in Stylish.

A quick google-fu brought up this option.

I guess it would be too time consuming for INS to configure a dark forum theme themselves?

There might be data mining in current add-on (Stylish). SimilarWeb( A datamining company). You can opt out, but am not sure how effective this is. Complains have been made. Not sure what will come of that. If you need the features then it must be accepted this can happen. There are forks as mentioned by Matt in posts below, but they too are unknown at his point. I need and want the new stylish feature, but not the bad stuff.

Edit: 3rd Sept (2016) Added some extra URLS to the Opera/Chrome section below, and also updated both Opera/Chrome and Firefox CSS files and links to v004b.

Some small updates to my stylish add-on CSS. (v004b) Its been working well for me on Opera (latest).

Save your eyes from bright screens with the dark forum theme.

Also this time better links and info below for Opera/Chrome (which I use), and Mozilla Firefox version of the Stylish add-on CSS.

Opera/Chrome/Vivaldi

Opera / Chrome Stylish add-on CSS - link (v004b).css

Click to create a new Stylish entry and copy and paste the CSS from the link above into the page and name it and then save.

new edit
Then in the stylish add-on manage page for this new style (opera/chrome).
Add these below using the option 'urls starting with’:

https://forums.inovaestudios.com/
forums.inovaestudios.com
https://forums.inovaestudios.com/t/
forums.inovaestudios.com/t/
https://forums.inovaestudios.com/t/
https://forums.inovaestudios.com/users/
https://forums.inovaestudios.com/c/
https://forums.inovaestudios.com/unread
https://forums.inovaestudios.com/latest
https://forums.inovaestudios.com/search
https://forums.inovaestudios.com/badges/
https://forums.inovaestudios.com/categories
https://forums.inovaestudios.com/top
https://forums.inovaestudios.com/categories

Maybe for you using the * wild card will work at the end of just a couple of URls… for me it didn’t for some reason and some forum pages like badges, bio profile etc would revert to forum default white. So I added these urls above.

The FF stylish add-on CSS below already has these URL’s included in the CSS. And you create it the same way by adding a new styilish entry.

Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox Stylish add-on CSS - link (v004b.css)

*Note:
Open on windows with wordpad to edit outside of stylish - or your preferred CSS editor. Let me know if the links don’t work. Scanned CSS files with anti-virus program before uploading them. If you right click and ‘save as’, please scan them yourself before use. Otherwise just open the link in a tab and copy the CSS direct into a new Stylish Add-on style page for both Opera/Chrome or FF.

It would be really good if we could have an installed Discouse dark and or semi-dark theme to choose from at some point in the future. Not to detract dev time from game development though, as and when  @INovaeKeith

If you’re using the stylish addon on chrome or firefox to use jonny’s css version you may want to know that Stylish was bought out a few months back and since an update last week is now spyware. There’s a clean fork available for chrome at https://github.com/JackCDK/osprey but im not sure about firefox yet.

I forgot to mention the easiest option, install an older version of stylish and disable automatic updates on it.

“Oh but we don’t see what they are doing with the data they’re harvesting” doesn’t make a difference. It’s now owned by a marketing company and they’ve updated it to harvest your data, it’s safe to assume they are selling that data back to ad networks and using it themselves.

I’m mildly disappointed, but not surprised. Soon it’ll reach a point where everything is spyware.

Well, if you’re using windows 10 you cant be completely sure your OS itself isnt spyware these days.

Also, i found a firefox alternative, it’s extremely barebones which for an extension that’s just for handling userstyles is very desirable imo. You just click it, paste in the css and it works. https://addons.mozilla.org/En-us/firefox/addon/stylrrr/

Here’s one for Chrome/Opera/Vivaldi, by a new dev dissatisfied with the current stylish add-on’s new wide ranging permissions and data mining. Maybe you can check it out and report back here.

A dark style for the Stylus add-on manage and settings windows. Created by one involved with Stylus.

Or search other dark styles for Stylus:

So is this dead? All the links are dead.

I did have it installed a while back but due to a reformat I appear to have lost the CSS file or whatever it was.

The white hurts my eyes.

I’d forgotten to update the links after dropbox killed off public link sharing. I’ll figure out an alternative when i get back to my desktop.

Public link sharing isn’t dead. Just the public folder that was automatically shared. You need to share the folders/files individually now. You still can share links. As faar as I know.

I’ve updated my dropbox CSS links for Opera/Chrome etc and Firefox.

Better than Stylish is Stylus

Here’s one for Chrome/Opera/Vivaldi, and now Firefox - by a new dev dissatisfied with the current stylish add-on’s new wide ranging permissions and data mining.

For the record the latest version of Discourse allows user customized themes, unfortunately I don’t know when I’m going to have the time to do an upgrade.

Thats good to hear, it should be a lot less laggy than our hacky solutions in this thread

Also i’ve updated the userscript link in the OP and replaced the css link with a link to jonny’s latest post, so people have that option available too.

Looks like discourse updated, the userscripts/userstyles stuff broke a little, i’ll have to look into fixing it later. Kinda hoping this is the version that has integrated user themes but i haven’t found the feature (it might just need to be enabled, though).

What broke for you. I don’t really have the CSS skills to fix the userstyles version. Would be nice to have a couple of discourse dark themes to choose from.
