Damage to asteroids

It’s the future and nihilism has been cured. If it had not been cured, every city inhabited by humanity would be gone because any joker in a fighter would be able to take out a city.

I love my folder of Huck. So creative.

They may be a beautiful utopia, a brutal 1984-like counter-utopia, an apparent utopia where everyone is in fact brainwashed or simply a very, very conservative and orderly society.
But whatever they are, they can’t be even remotely close to societies we are familiar with. And they certainly can’t be the SFC.
Nihilism isn’t something you “cure” anymore that you cure anger, curiosity or hatred. You can suppress it to extinction through (for us) extreme societal pressure, education and/or brainwashing, but if you want it to stick, you’ll have to edit the human mind.

Specialized defences are simpler and don’t require to literally rewrite the entire lore from scratch.

I personally think it boils down to time. Game time that is. If the game matches last hours to a day then persistent damage is pointless. It won be around long enough for it to matter. If it lasts days, weeks or months, then having persistent damage would add to the feel of the game. Coming across where an epic battle took place feeds that sense of exploration. That “Some thing happened here.” feeling.

Now the real question is at what scale does environmental destruction matter. Destroy small rocks? Why? Its looks neat in the heat of battle. But then you have to ask, are these small rocks blocking your shot? Should these rock be hitting our ships?

Destroy larger asteroids? Neat but then you will have people getting on and doing nothing but destroying asteriods. Is it permanent? What if the smaller asteroids are destructible, if it was client side only to every one in a radius then it won’t be taxing on the server. Once every one clears out those things reset, think of it as not knowing what rock was yours when you throw it in the ocean.

Simple particle effects and temporary scaring maybe the best way to handle this. As the asteroid gets hit more and more rocks chip off and create a volumetric cloud around the area adding to the enviroment. Not permanent but gives the feel that you are hitting this thing. It will feel less static I think.

Planet scaring? I like the idea of this the most. After a base gets destroyed, a huge dog fight near the surface, craters and wreckage all around. Signs of orbital bombardment scaring the landscape. I think this is worth the effort but again it boils down to time and how long those things will be there to care.

That’s kind of my thoughts on it. I’m typing on my phone so please excuse grammatical errors. Also as to the discussion on saturns rings, it’s mostly ice (like 99%) so it wouldn’t take as much to destroy one. On the other hand, the rings orbit so fast and at different velocities at different radius that you would be to concerned with navigation to see the pretty rocksplosions.
