All aboard the HypePlane for the rings video/kickstarter!

When did you tweet this? I don’t see it anywhere.

*edit: OOOH, it was in “Tweets & Replies” on your twitter page.

Just wasted the last 10 minutes of my life scrolling down your tweets page to make sure the website hadn’t dropped any of the regular tweets out before realising this was a thing. (I don’t use twitter… ever really)

Also; what’s the point of having the website-twitter link if it’s only going to show 20% of the stuff you put on there?

Alright apparently I didn’t tweet it cuz I can’t find it either lol. I must’ve posted it on the forums then. Anyway if you guys are looking for someone to blame it’s my fault. I recorded the footage, I have the footage, the video hasn’t been released because I have been distracted with my move and the plans I made with a 3rd party to process the footage fell through.

The rest of the team has been hard at work making progress on the actual KS demo/video the entire time.

What progress can be done by the others in an already recorded video that is in your possession?

I think you guys should lay down your basic plans for all these people reading here, I don’t understand how you don’t find it necessary to say “we have already found or are searching for another guy, this will take one or two weeks at most, then A and B also has to be finished and then the road for the KS will be open”. Don’t give us dates, just this basic stuff that re-assures fans that things are happening.

The video in my possession is not the KS video. It’s a separate video we recorded using a snapshot of where the tech was at a month ago and it’s showing off a specific aspect of our tech - the new planetary rings code. Since the footage was recorded everybody has continued working on the things they need to get done for us to launch our Kickstarter campaign. The only blocker in releasing the “rings” video is processing the raw video footage and adding music all of which can be done independently of the work that everybody else is doing on the KS demo/video.

Thanks for the answer Keith, good to know. Hope you don’t run into any other problems from now and on.

They are all communicating…

But as Flavien says, these are not the same games. They may be comparable competition when INS attempt to launch the Infinity MMO, but that’s not going to happen for some time. Plus, neither of them are even complete at the moment, and one has caught itself in some controversy as to how it is being funded. INovae would do a lot better to have a smooth and no-bullshit Kickstarter that clearly lays out what they aim to achieve. That stuff takes time.

As for the community, what community? The population of the forum has shifted somewhat over the past 10 years or so this engine has been in development, and there are fairly few among us that date that far back, there’s few enough that date back as far as the old forums. The community INovae is most likely to care about pleasing are also less likely to be put off by another few months or even years of waiting. They can discuss cool things on the forums in the mean-time.

Communication occurs when community is updated with relative frequency about current agenda of game’s developers, progress being made towards current goals or reasons for occuring delays.

Take previous movie for example. Two weeks passed and… welll…? If communication would be occuring, one of devs would have made announcement explaining reasons behind them missing deadline. That didn’t happen until month later people started pointing out that deadline was missed.

Latest posts made by INovae guys in this thread show that they truly are capable of communicating with fans. I wish they did that more often and without need for prior call out by us.

I want to fly in space, trade and shoot. I can do that in SC or Elite. The question I ask is why I:BS should get my money too when I have fun in one of those already?

I’m sorry but attacking those games brings nothing to the table. The point still stands: those games are out there. People are playing them, investing their time and money into them, getting absorbed by their communities.

From what I understand, Battlescape is planting itself squarely in the, as yet, totally unclaimed market space of ‘medium-term semi-persistence’. It’s planned to be a lot deeper and more involved than Star-Citizen’s fast-paced commander module game modes, and a lot more accessible than the long-term persistent universes that Elite is going to have by the end of the year, and that Star Citizen wants to have (at least an early build of) by 2015-16.

It’s something that hasn’t really been done before, for a space sim anyway. The game could sit quite well in it’s own little niche were all things to go well in getting it made.

*I’ve also said before, I don’t care if the developers are silent until the kickstarter’s done, so long as they’re BIG AND LOUD AND ALL UP IN EVERYONE’S FACE once it is.

**That being said, extra shinies are always nice to see posted.

I still find it odd that, even with a procedural engine that can create millions of different planets/views with the press of a button, we still don’t have a weekly or monthly screenshot type of deal. And that despite all devs are clearly working on the project, it still feels like its almost dead. I understand that the actual content, like ships/surprises/videos need to be left for the kickstarter, but why can’t we get a forum post every month with a couple of sentences describing what each dev did that month? Something like:

-Keith worked on fixing bugs on the whatever editor.
-Flavien finally fixed the lod code that was broken when we added bloom last month.
-Andre is still at work on ship codename X.

That would take like 20 minutes a month, would help grow the community and the interest in the game, would make the project feel less stagnant(from the outside), and would save time on having to answer every time somebody complains about the lack of updates.

You can also do those things in:
X Rebirth
Darkstar One
Freelancer (UK link)
etc…

So why do you need to play SC or Elite when you can have fun in one of those games?

Yeah, other games might already share the same niche as I:B will, but there’s plenty of room for innovation in this market, and this kind of game with persistence are fairly rare.

The thing is, the closest we’ve had so far to what Infinity is going for is Freelancer, heavily modified. However, Freelancer would severely struggle to deal with the numbers of concurrent players on a server that Infinity aims for, though I think Naiba sums this up beta.

@AngryMarine: Those updates aren’t meaningful to most people though, especially without any insight to their actual development process. Also, managing updates is difficult enough when your workforce is working full-time, but when most of your staff are part-time then it is going to get tricky. If all of them were working full-time and following a structured development methodology like Agile/Scrum, then it’d be a lot easier for them to give updates.

Also, every 20 minutes Flavien spends doing project management is an hour or more that he’s not doing development. And as we’ve already covered multiple times in this thread, Keith is a little busy dealing with a new job and moving halfway across the US.

They’re not entitled to do that kind of work. The Inovae Studios team does not owe a single one of us a damn thing! The truth hurts.

Those updates WOULD be meaningful to everyone. Half the complaints stem from the issue of poor community involvement, and I’m sure people would love to know how the game development is going. It doesn’t matter if people haven’t had enough insight into the development process thus far, as regular updates would still be comforting and reassuring to many people.

If it’s difficult to provide updates because the development process is not structured enough, the lack of structure itself is a fundamental issue as well. However, despite this, providing us with a weekly batch of screenshots here on the website (rather than twitter) would not at all be a challenge. Sure Keith is busy dealing with moving now, but he hasn’t been moving across the United States for the past several years has he? No, during a typical work week, a 20 minute update would be a small sacrifice to make and would benefit the community greatly.

And while they aren’t obligated to do this for us, they should do it for the sake of Infinity: to ensure the game attracts an audience, and to ensure it succeeds. In the end, it is the community who determines the success of the game, and the community isn’t going to want to invest their time in a project if the developers won’t share it with them.

Also, where are you getting the statistic that 20 minutes of project management equates to an hour lost in development time? Unless Flavien lives in a parallel universe where time flows 3 times faster, 20 minutes of project management would only detract 20 minutes from development time for the game.

I just caught myself up with the rampage of new posts on this thread and couldn’t help but cringe a little. Fellow members of our unesteemed(some of us take offense to the opposite) community. We are here because we love a game that has taken our dreams. There is no reason to attack the devs for their decisions while dedicated their life to creating a game for us and for themselves. We know they are working, they have been at it for a decade or so now. Statistics says that they are still going - even if they don’t give us a shiny screenshot or a short sentence.

I originally wrote the following as a private message to Keith, but I thought about it and decided that everyone should see it, the devs and the community, because Inovae needs the support we say we will give, not us questioning their every move.

"To Keith and the Inovae team,

I first played the ICP 7 years ago and you’ve had me hooked ever since. I have a few friends that I constantly update on the progress you guys are making, and when the time comes I will promote the crap out of the KS over all my circles and forums. Most of the community that is here has been with you for a significant amount of time. We all want you to succeed and will do our best to help out. Do you what you guys need to do. If it takes awhile longer, then so be it. I’m currently getting a degree and have no time to play anyways.

I played Eve fairly often for about 4 years, but the entire time I was playing I was wishing it was TQFE. Some people have played eve for over a decade at this point. When I think about I:BS and ultimately TQFE I see it as the game that I will devote a huge fraction of my life to. I already have waiting heh.

I don’t know you or the team, and I can’t know what you and the team have gone through to continue working on Infinity. So, thank you Keith, and thank Flavien for me, and Andre, and the rest of the devs who I can’t remember at the moment. You guys are creating my dream game. Inovae does not get enough praise and thanks for what you all are doing to bring our dreams to a reality. "

As the community, lets brainstorm how we can help and advertise infinity and help make the KS successful, not try and do Inovae’s job for them. How can we help?

It’s also late and I apologize for any grammar and spelling mistakes. I’ll fix them later.

Certainly not by having a go at them for not giving us anything, agreed.

Recently there has been a massive surge in people getting impatient and frustrated but this is a good thing. It means there are people who care about the project. The reason we get frustrated is because we are on the tantalising edge of new footage - but I totally believe we cannot blame @INovaeKeith for Life getting in the way. It happens to me a lot too. He has shown us he is dedicated to the cause, so let’s cut him some slack.

I think sometimes people forget these things, thank you for reminding the community, particularly the newer members.

I-Novae does not need to start its publicity campaign just now. As far as the internet is concerned, they are dormant/non-existent and staying that way a bit longer is not going to hurt. There are still enough core members of this community who have been around for years that, when something happens, we can be the foundations for the newbies.

So how can we help? By staying here, waiting patiently (as always) and being ready to support. When you’ve been around as long as I have, you can sense when something is coming - it may just not be on the immediate gratification timescales some people are used to.

The engine is under development concurrently with the art tools and art workflow/pipeline. It’s difficult to provide tangible/substantial community involvement at this stage of development, other than highly skilled coders and artists wanting to put in long hours on the project for free, luckily we have found some (mostly from the community). The game design will be presented during the KS, the game development will come after the project is funded. Post KS is where we will seek much more community involvement via alpha/beta testing and feedback, ideas and other input. Once I:B is released/shipped the modding tools will follow and the community asset contributions/I-Novae marketplace can begin. There will not be any community contributions for the initial development of I:B as the art budget is scoped and set.

In terms of monthly, weekly or some of you wanting daily updates/blurbs, the art team has shown you all we are willing to show, we’ve made a decision to not show anything new until the crowd funding campaign. We are working in our spare time outside of our fulltime jobs and lives, we don’t have enough to show you without dipping into what we’ve been working on for the KS video.

In terms of coding updates, we are developing a game engine that will one day be commercially licensed to assist in the funding of current/future INS projects. I have never followed a game engine’s development before so I am not aware of just how much of the IP is shared freely on the internet, be it implementations, code, things that are busted, fixes and whatnot. Keith/Flavien can address that if they so choose. Chances are, if they are going to give blurbs, it will be on twitter, anything more substantial will show up in a blog.

We share with you in the frustration of the slow pace of development (maybe our girlfriends more than many of you :)). Remember, projects like Star Citizen and even Elite Dangerous had pre-funded funding and manpower resources that dwarf ours (and I do not believe they shared anything with their communities until they actually presented their game idea via KickStarter, which is the stage at which we currently reside), we only have our spare time + bank accounts. I know many are sick and tired of hearing that “excuse”, but it is the truth.

I saw that Tweet then it was gone. It wasn’t jest me then.

NovaeGene Ok then will there be more then one faction stile of ships? I don’t recall if this was answered or not. I do remember that there will be more then one class of ship though.

I believe I have answered this before, so I hope my answer is consistent. If we only achieve the min. funding goal, there will be one faction at time of release, the Starfold. We plan to have a stretch goal that will add the Centarus faction. We do not plan to have a stretch goal to add the Deltan faction, that will be reserved for future DLC or other game update.

Recently there has been a massive surge in people getting impatient and frustrated but this is a good thing.[/quote]

It’s good that their potential customers are impatient. It’s a disaster that they’re frustrated. That sense of frustration is Keith’s doing, however unintentional it might be. He enjoys dealing with the potential customer base, in using social media to share his enthusiasm about the work they’re doing, and so forth. Unfortunately, that’s all premature because the team cannot predict the timing of their deliverables. He cannot make any statements about deliverables until he knows when they will be delivered. For a staffed, full-time company, delivery is almost a foregone conclusion. For a group of people scattered around the world working part time, not so much.

Keith should have continued with the most productive outlet for the community - namely, to distract us with gameplay debates, modeling competitions and the like. A community that does nothing more than kibitz over a few tweets is no community at all. It becomes more of an unruly mob.

Gameplay debates? Modeling competitions? But INS isn’t going to use any of that stuff, right? Well, make that clear right from the outset, but if somebody presents a model of a ship that everyone goes bonkers over, the modeling team can sure learn something from that. The modelers themselves might find inspiration from artwork or models that people submit. It is contribution by influence. If INS said that the nose of the ship you posted was the inspiration for the Jabber 6 Miner, that would be pretty cool. You get nothing more than a public nod from a team member, but that’s better than creating your art and pinning it to a wall in your room.

Similarly, the gameplay debates might give a few ideas to the developers about hot buttons that players have about this or that, or point out deficiencies in certain gameplay interactions. Do players want realism or just big explosions? Do they want to control whole fleets or just work as a cook on a ship?

I have no idea how close the team is to the Kickstarter for Battlescape, so starting up such a thing now might be pointless. However, if there are still several months or more to the Kickstarter, throwing a few bones to gnaw on would likely impart some health to the enthusiast community.

Go back to the old forums and find the most popular topics. Discussions of weapon systems was a favorite. Ask a few leading questions and you’ll likely get a lot of folks playing their favorite space game via debate in the forums.

In short, everyone is focused on the Kickstarter, but the team isn’t ready to do the Kickstarter. The team should distract the community so it stops focusing on the Kickstarter.
